Texas — the state with the largest prison population in the United States — is facing mounting legal pressure over a deadly and ongoing heat crisis inside its cells.
As extreme summer temperatures push conditions inside un-airconditioned units to dangerous levels, incarcerated people are being exposed to suffering, serious illness, and death. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) has now been hit with a new wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Jason Wilson, who was found dead in his solitary confinement cell at the Coffield Unit in July 2024. His family describes the cell as "brutally hot" and un-airconditioned.
The lawsuit adds to years of legal and advocacy pressure on Texas to install air conditioning across its prison system — one of the few in the nation that still largely lacks it. Advocates argue the state has had ample warning and ample time to act.
This is not an isolated tragedy. It is a pattern. And it demands a response.
